E.C. #025 - Hay un par de cosas que decir sobre Haren. Un par no es ni 1 ni 3, es 2, porque no hace falta decir más. Nro 1: es una banda oportuna. Es oportuna porque en tiempos de hipsters punks, de modernidad y de una escala para medir el éxito desarrollada por y para la exposición virtual, necesitaba escuchar una banda tan rudimentaria como honesta, para sentir que aún tenemos algo más que demagogia marginal. A ninguna de estas chicas de Murcia les interesa qué tenés para decirles ni cómo te fue. A ninguna le importa sorprenderte, sin embargo te sorprenden porque sin recursos logran lo que muchos estudios de grabación buscan sin éxito. Nro 2: lo primero que se me vino a la cabeza cuando escuché Haren fueron las palabras "más allá del no futuro". Más allá del no futuro es lo que vivieron y sobrevivieron las primeras punks de Medellín, centro del cartel de Pablo Escobar, centro de una violencia estatal, paramilitar y narcótica. Inmediatamente quise expresarle a Anyela, la guitarrista, cantante y compositora de esta banda, la sensación de no futuro, de precariedad y de violencia que me habían transmitido, sin necesidad de letras altamente políticas. Es más bien eso que tiene lo que no es hardcore ni metalero y solo transmite el punk, sobre todo el sudamericano: la podredumbre y la falta de aspiración transmiten mucho más que las escalas complejas, los punteos virtuosos y las letras afiladas de personas leídas. Luego pude conocerla en persona, me enteré que era de Pereyra, una ciudad ubicada en el eje cafetero, región que se ubica al sur de Medellín. Entendí por qué esto suena como suena, y una vez más me sentí rara conmigo misma, porque el punk que más me gusta siempre surge desde las entrañas de las ciudades más oprimidas de Latinoamérica.

E.C. #025 - There are a couple of things to say about Haren. A couple is not 1 nor 3, it is 2, because it’s not needed to say more than 2. Number 1: it's a timely band. It's timely because in times of hipster punks, modernity and a scale to measure success developed by and for the virtual exposure, I needed to listen to a band as rudimentary as honest, to feel and believe that we still have more than marginal demagogy. Any of these girls from Murcia cares about what you have to say nor how's been your day. Any of them want to surprise you, but they do anyway because, without resources, they reach what many recording studios seek without success.Number 2: the first thing that came to mind when I listened to Haren were the words "beyond the no future". Beyond the no future is what the first punks from Medellín lived and survived. Medellín was the center of Pablo Escobar's cartel, center of paramilitary violence, state violence, and narcotic violence. I immediately wanted to express this to Anyela, the guitarist, singer and composer of the band, the feeling of no future, precariousness and violence that they had transmitted to me, without the need of highly-political lyrics. It’s exactly that thing that you may find in punk but not in hardcore punk or metal punk, that thing you may find especially in punk latinoamericano: rottenness and lack of aspiration may transmit much more than complex scales, virtuous fingerpicking and sharp lyrics from people who read a lot. Later I was able to meet her in person, I found out that she was from Pereyra, a city located in el eje cafetero, a region that is located south of Medellín. I understood why this sounds the way it does, and once again I felt weird with myself, because the punk I like most always comes from the bowels of the most oppressed places of Latin America.

Glorious hardcore filth out of, I think, Morocco. Apparently Arabic language slabs of attitude directed toward religion and the establishment. But the venom is substantial enough musically to make it all worthwhile. Gavin Hellyer
